Jason was not around much in October, so when my friend, Beth, (also husbandless for the weekend) suggested that we should go to a pumpkin patch, we eagerly joined in on the "simple" fall activity. All would have gone very smoothly, had we not encountered the following problems:
- The forecast claimed it would be much warmer than it was in actuality and we were a bit underprepared.
- The various activities that the pumpkin patch's website boasted of occupied our children for approximately 3 minutes.
- To get to the pumpkins, you had to take a "hayride" (aka a tractor & wagon with a few hay bushels thrown in the middle). This meant that we could not take strollers.
- They did not provide wheel barrows like other pumpkin patches and did not seem to have small pumpkin options. But we made it that far, so we were determined to finish the task.
- Gabby and Claire were both screaming to be held the whole time. Baby Tess was screaming to be fed, but only after there was no where to sit down and feed her.
- Gabby's usual bladder of steel failed her and she decided she had to go ASAP. We barely made it to the porta-potty while holding back Claire who wanted to touch everything.
- We each had to balance two children plus impossibly heavy pumpkins back onto the "hayride" and all over the muddy area trying to weigh and purchase them, while dealing with hungry, tired children.
Sometimes I wonder if the husbands didn't encourage this outing just to increase our appreciation for them.
That being said, we did still manage to have a fun and memorable time, as witnessed by the smiles captured below. Next year, we'll just make sure we have a few extra hands (or we may just take the day off and send the husbands instead...).
